Plan to Succeed continued, - Persistence
Persistence is a personality trait. It is more important than intellect when endeavoring to succeed. In psychology, it gets measured in the Temperament & Character inventory. It is heritable and may also be developed. One definition states it is “perseverance in spite of fatigue or frustration”. The ability to persevere is tied to self-esteem. Those individuals with lower self-esteem tend to be Self-handicapping. Self-handicapping is a phenomenon that is used to protect one’s self-esteem by blaming an external component or element rather than recognizing low performance or lack of ability. (Loser’s limp). To help you develop Persistence, use the following exercises. 1. Finish a project ahead of time. 2. Consciously dismiss any thoughts of stopping and focus on the task at hand. 3. Use a time management aid. 4. Set your goal and create a plan for sticking to it. 5. On your task list attack the most difficult items first. As Sam Rader says, “swallow the frog”. (Adapted from a list provided by psychologist Jonathan Haidt, University of VA) Next week we’ll examine Attitude.

Winning a 6 Part Series
Plan to Succeed continued, - Winning
I’ve been contemplating a comment Bryan made in one of our Ninja meetings on how many people he has seen set a goal and come so close to achieving it only to give up just before that realization. That started me to thinking about movies like Papillon or Unbroken where the main character’s primary goal was to survive. In these true life movies, the main characters prevailed! Yes, I know there are better examples right here in our industry of successful people prevailing but those are great movies, right? But why do some prevail when others don’t and what sets these successful individuals apart? What common traits do winners share that others lack? Here’s a list that may apply. 1.Persistence 2.Attitude 3.Effort 4. Courage 5.Competition 6.Adversity. Next week let’s explore Persistence and it’s role in helping us succeed and achieve our goals.
