Plan to Succeed continued, - Persistence

Persistence is a personality trait. It is more important than intellect when endeavoring to succeed. In psychology, it gets measured in the Temperament & Character inventory. It is heritable and may also be developed. One definition states it is “perseverance in spite of fatigue or frustration”. The ability to persevere is tied to self-esteem. Those individuals with lower self-esteem tend to be Self-handicapping. Self-handicapping is a phenomenon that is used to protect one’s self-esteem by blaming an external component or element rather than recognizing low performance or lack of ability. (Loser’s limp). To help you develop Persistence, use the following exercises. 1. Finish a project ahead of time. 2. Consciously dismiss any thoughts of stopping and focus on the task at hand. 3. Use a time management aid. 4. Set your goal and create a plan for sticking to it. 5. On your task list attack the most difficult items first. As Sam Rader says, “swallow the frog”. (Adapted from a list provided by psychologist Jonathan Haidt, University of VA) Next week we’ll examine Attitude.
